New figures have revealed that the Scottish Government budget, forced through the Scottish Parliament by the SNP and the Greens, will cut £5.1m from the budget allocated next year to West Lothian Council.

Analysis by the independent experts at the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) shows the scale of the cuts set to be imposed in 2017/18.

Neil Findlay MSP said:

The SNP-Green backroom budget deal cuts £5.1million from funding for schools and care for elderly. The claim by the Scottish Government and the Greens that the budget is ‘just about good enough’ is absolutely farcical.

The reality is that services across Scotland will have been hit by £1.5 billion of cuts since 2011 thanks to this budget.

We need to be investing in our schools so our young people have the skills to compete for the jobs of the future. We need to invest in care for our elderly to take the pressure off our hospitals.

Instead, the SNP-Green budget freezes taxes and cuts services. It’s an austerity budget that will continue to divide Scotland between the richest and the rest.  That’s why Labour will continue to push to use Holyrood’s powers to stop the cuts and invest in our public services instead.
