The shopworkers trade union, USDAW, has revealed statistics that show retail workers regularly experience violence, abuse and threats in their workplace.
USDAW’s Freedom from Fear survey highlighted that throughout 2018 in Scotland, 70% of shopworkers had experienced verbal abuse, 42% had been threatened and 18% were assaulted every day.
Local MSP, Neil Findlay, will be supporting his colleague Daniel Johnson’s protection of workers bill, which will seek to provide more protections for retail staff.
Neil Findlay MSP said:
“It is appalling that retail workers continue to be subjected to violence and abuse in the workplace – an environment that should be free from harm.
“Urgent action is required to tackle this very grave issue – these shocking statistics do not have to become the norm. That is why I am pledging my support to my colleague Daniel Johnson’s bill that will give extra protections to retail workers.
