This week, Santander announced that its branch situated on George Street in Bathgate will close its doors on 25 April 2019 as part of a decision to close 140 branches nationwide.
Bosses have confirmed that the reason for this closure is that the majority of its customers use a variety of banking methods to complete their transactions, citing a particularly notable shift to digital banking. Nevertheless, the closure risks excluding customers who are unable to access digital banking facilities, or unable to travel further to access another branch.
Local MSP Neil Findlay has condemned the Bathgate branch closure, which will result in several job losses.
Reacting to the news of the closures, Neil Findlay MSP said:
“This is a devastating blow to Santander employees and customers.
“Many customers are excluded from digital banking services because they may not have access to digital devices or possess the knowledge or skills.
“Not least, I have been advised that redeployment and job losses will take place.
“This closure is driven by the search for maximum profits, to the detriment of workers, customers and communities.
