7 July 2018 marked the one year anniversary of the closure of St John’s Hospital Children’s Ward to out of hours inpatients.
Too often, sick and injured children have been forced to drive by their local hospital, towards the Royal Hospital of Sick Children in Edinburgh for treatment. The extra distance means that children’s conditions often deteriorate on route to the hospital.
In 2018, this is outrageous.
Despite warnings from the Royal College of Paediatricians that West Lothian requires a 24/7 paediatric service, the Scottish Government have given no indication of when this ward will re-open.
I have held demonstrations, parliamentary debates, raised this at FMQs, designed petitions and surveys and written to the Health Secretary and Chief Executive of NHS Lothian for updates.
I will continue to fight to ensure that this vital service is fully returned to children and families across West Lothian.
