It has been revealed this week that 1035 children, who ordinarily would have been treated at St John’s Children’s Ward, have been transferred to Edinburgh for treatment in the absence of an out-of-hours paediatric service in West Lothian.
The out-of-hours service has been closed since 7th July 2017, meaning that sick and injured children and their families have had to endure a 60 mile round trip, causing them further stress and expense. Quite often, children get sicker whilst travelling.
Neil Findlay MSP said:
“Children and families in West Lothian desperately need the reinstatement of the 24/7 children’s ward at St John’s.
“Far too many children are travelling past their local hospital, enduring a longer journey to access treatment, risking a deterioration in their health on the way.
“We urgently need a sustainable solution to this situation.
